Day 7 of Advent

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.  And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”  So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.  And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,  Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Genesis 12:1-7

When God told Abram to get up and go, Abram got up and went. It was that simple. Abram didn’t know and didn’t ask where he was going, how long it would take him to get there, or what he would find in this new place. He came from Ur (modern day Iraq) and, years later, arrived in Canaan, which we now call Israel.

Abram was very special to God and God promised to take care of him and give him many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren-, as many as there are stars in the sky! Abram was faithfully obedient, and we are so glad because through Abram, Jesus was born! Like Abram all of us on one moment in our life would be asked to leave what we call comfortable and go towards the place where we become useful and fruitful. Have you ever taken a journey into the unknown?

Let’s pray: You come to us in this Advent time, Yahweh, as You came to Abram so many years ago. And just like Abram, You called US to be Your people through whom others will be blessed. We pray we will have faith like Abraham to obey You in all You call us to do. Amen.

MEMORY VERSE: In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.  – Genesis 12:3b
